Can Positivity Change Every Customer Interaction?

Originally published in The Gold Dust Standard on LinkedIn (opens in a new tab).

We're often told to "stay positive".

But let's be honest. When customers are frustrated, targets are mounting, and your inbox seems never-ending, positivity can feel easier said than done.

Yet positivity isn't about pretending everything is perfect. It's about choosing the attitude and energy we bring into every interaction, even when situations are challenging.

In customer service and customer experience roles, positivity can have a powerful impact. Customers can hear it in our tone of voice, see it in our body language, and feel it in the way we approach conversations. A positive interaction can reduce tension, build trust, and leave customers feeling valued, even when we can't give them exactly what they want.

The good news is that positivity is a skill that can be developed. Small habits can make a big difference:

• Start conversations with warmth and genuine interest.

• Focus on what you can do rather than what you can't.

• Celebrate small wins throughout the day.

• Take a moment to reset after difficult interactions.

• Remember that your energy often influences the energy of others.

One positive conversation may not seem significant in the moment, but over time these interactions shape how customers feel about your organisation and how colleagues experience working with you.

Positivity is not about being relentlessly cheerful. It's about bringing optimism, professionalism, and purpose to every interaction. When we do that consistently, we create better experiences for customers, stronger relationships within teams, and a more enjoyable working environment for everyone.

I'd love to hear your thoughts.

How much does positivity impact your interactions with others?
