One of the strongest signals from this week’s poll was just how much pressure leaders are carrying and how mixed the experiences are when it comes to developing real resilience at work.
And that word
resilience
is where I want to pause for a moment.
Because resilience has quietly become misunderstood.
For many leaders, resilience has come to mean pushing through, staying strong, or not letting things show. But that version of resilience is exhausting and it rarely lasts.
Real leadership resilience isn’t about how much pressure you can absorb.
It’s about how well you recover.
Recover from long days.
Recover from difficult conversations.
Recover from the emotional load of carrying people, performance and expectations all at once.
In the organisations I work with, leaders aren’t struggling because they lack skill or intent. Most care deeply about their teams and want to do a good job. What wears them down is the absence of space, space to think clearly, reset emotionally and regain perspective.
When recovery doesn’t happen, something subtle changes.
Leaders don’t suddenly become ineffective.
They start coping.
Coping looks like:
Shorter patience under pressure
Delayed or avoided conversations
Inconsistent decisions
Less presence with their team
And over time, coping quietly erodes standards for leaders, teams and customers alike.
This is why resilience can’t be left to chance or treated as a personal responsibility alone. If organisations want consistent leadership and strong cultures, recovery has to be designed into the way leaders work, not bolted on as an afterthought.
Resilient leaders don’t do more.
They recover better.
The Gold Dust Reflection
If you have 60 seconds, I’d love you to reflect on this:
What is the one thing that drains your energy fastest as a leader?
And what genuinely helps you recover not distract, but recover?
Those answers matter more than any framework ever will.
Until next time, Stay memorable
