How Asking the Right Questions Can Completely Transform customer interactions

The businesses creating the strongest customer loyalty are not necessarily the loudest, fastest, or biggest.
They’re simply the ones asking better questions.
Think about it.
How many opportunities are missed every single day because nobody asked the question that truly mattered?
A customer leaves because nobody explored what was frustrating them.
An employee disengages because nobody asked how they were really feeling.
A relationship weakens because assumptions replaced curiosity.
A leader misses valuable insight because nobody felt confident enough to speak up.
In customer service and customer experience, curiosity is one of the most underrated leadership skills.
Yet it has the power to completely transform interactions, relationships, and results.
The Fear That Holds So Many People Back
I’ve seen incredibly talented people remain stuck simply because they were afraid to ask questions.
One colleague stayed in a role that no longer fulfilled him for years because he never asked his manager about progression opportunities.
When he finally did, everything changed.
The opportunity had always been there. The conversation simply hadn’t happened.
And it’s not limited to careers.
I once knew someone who spent years assuming what their partner wanted rather than asking meaningful questions directly.
One honest conversation changed everything. Communication improved. Understanding deepened. The relationship became stronger.
The lesson?
Questions unlock doors that assumptions keep closed.
What This Means for Customer Experience Leaders
As Heads of Customer Service and Customer Experience, your teams are having thousands of conversations every week.
But here’s the real question:
Are they truly curious?
Because customers can instantly feel the difference between:
Someone following a script
And someone genuinely trying to understand them
The organisations creating memorable experiences today are building cultures where curiosity is encouraged, not feared.
They are teaching teams to:
Ask better follow-up questions
Listen beyond the surface
Explore customer emotions, not just problems
Understand the “why” behind customer behaviour
Create conversations, not transactions
And that changes everything.
Because customers rarely remember perfect processes.
They remember how understood they felt.
The Curiosity Advantage
Curiosity does more than improve conversations.
It improves:
Customer loyalty
Employee engagement
Problem-solving
Retention
Trust
Leadership influence
Commercial outcomes
When curiosity becomes part of your customer experience culture, teams stop rushing interactions and start creating meaningful moments.
That’s where stronger relationships are built.
And in today’s market, relationships are one of the few competitive advantages businesses cannot automate.
Tip of the Week
💡 Replace assumptions with questions.
Instead of: “We already know what the customer wants.”
Ask: “What might we be missing?”
Instead of: “That customer was difficult.”
Ask: “What frustration were they actually experiencing?”
Small shifts in curiosity create massive shifts in customer understanding.
Why These Conversations Matter
This is exactly why I’m building my podcast conversations and newsletter community around leadership, customer experience, and meaningful human connection.
Over the coming months, I’ll be speaking with senior leaders across customer service, operations, and experience-focused organisations about:
Building stronger service cultures
Creating emotionally intelligent customer experiences
Leading teams more effectively
Improving engagement and loyalty
Turning conversations into long-term relationships
Using curiosity as a competitive advantage
These are not surface-level conversations.
They are practical, honest discussions designed for leaders who genuinely want to improve customer experience and strengthen business relationships.
